During the last several weeks I have found myself involved in frequent conversations with many people regarding the responsibility of Catholics to vote in the upcoming election with a good and well-formed conscience. Some people in these conversations have expressed troubled consciences because of their repulsion by the tenor and substance of the candidates’ speeches and political platforms that are each at odds with the Gospel and the authentic teaching of the Church.
The main reason for Pope Francis’ journey to the United States was to participate and to speak at the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. “The Family” was not only the topic of his address to that gathering of people; rather, it is a metaphor that imbued his entire approach to his time spent among us.
In the first chapter of the Book of Genesis we read how God created the heavens and the earth; God created man and woman in His image and likeness — to whom He entrusted the fruits of the earth to sustain life.
