Synod working document expands scope of family issues, pastoral needs

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The working document, intended to guide discussions at the Synod of Bishops on the family in October, included a much wider array of issues affecting the family than were in the final document released after the extraordinary synod last year.


U.S. Catholic leaders laud Pope Francis for encyclical on environment

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- U.S. Catholic leaders lauded Pope Francis for his encyclical, "Laudato Si', on Care for Our Common Home," for calling all to be good stewards, for putting "a human face" on environmental issues, and for starting "a new conversation" on the urgent need to protect all of creation.

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- In his brief pontificate, Pope Francis has coined some colorful terms to get his points across, for example, using "bat Christians" to describe those who hide their faith. While the new phrases he uses in his ecology encyclical are not as punchy, they succinctly help illustrate his points that care for the environment is a human and moral obligation.
