COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CNS) -- Canonizing Sri Lanka's first saint, who ministered to Catholics under persecution three centuries earlier, Pope Francis proclaimed what he called the "fundamental human right" of religious freedom.
In a historic moment in the 2,000 years of the Catholic Church Sunday, two popes were canonized by Pope Francis with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI looking on, as did more than a million faithful who packed not only St. Peter’s Square but the streets and plazas stretching back into central Rome.
His Holiness Pope Francis on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 named Rev. Msgr. Stephen J. Berg, 62, presently the diocesan administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Worth, as the fifth bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Pueblo.
